Our History

26th July 1991 — the day when our organization formally came into existence. Before that, a group of individuals carried out various charitable activities to serve the economically, educationally, and financially backward population of the local area.

During that time, India — especially the Kachchh district of Gujarat — faced severe shortages in basic needs such as food, shelter, education, poverty alleviation, and financial stability.

According to the 1991 Census, the following were recorded:

  • Literacy rate: 52.21%
  • Poverty line: 6.5 lakh families below poverty line during 9th plan
  • Total Population: Approx. 84.64 crore (24% growth over the previous decade)
  • Kachchh Population: Approx. 0.13 crores

Financially stable sections of society and government support (such as tax exemptions and grants) played a vital role. Encouraged by this, a group of individuals formally established a charitable trust named Shree Navjeevan Viklang Sevashray, registered under the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950.

At that time, India’s economy was in the early stages of development, making it difficult to raise public donations. However, in the initial 6–7 years, the organization successfully organized small-scale activities like:

  • Educational awareness drives
  • Campaigns against alcohol and drug use
  • Girl child protection awareness
  • Free medical and health check-up camps

These small achievements inspired the organization to expand its outreach. However, due to funding constraints, many goals couldn’t be fully achieved. Despite that, members continued contributing from their personal earnings.

Then came 26th January 2001, a tragic day when an earthquake devastated the Kachchh district. It was one of the worst natural disasters in Indian history:

  • 18,000–20,000 people lost their lives
  • Approximately 1.5 lakh injured
  • 4 lakh people became homeless
  • 15.9 million people out of 37.8 million were affected
  • 80% of food and water resources were destroyed
  • Estimated financial loss: ₹200 billion

Recovery was difficult, but many charitable organizations worldwide helped restore the district. However, problems related to education, employment, and awareness remained.

Our organization resolved to address this by establishing schools, hostels, girls’ education centers, and residential schools for physically and mentally challenged children from economically weaker sections.
